Voting Methods in the 2022 Municipal Election
In 2022, voters in the Township of The Archipelago will once again be able to cast their vote in the municipal election anywhere they can access the internet or telephone. You will require two pieces of identification when you cast your vote. The first piece of identification will be the pin number that is mailed to you by the Township and the second piece of identification will be your date of birth.
Benefits of Internet and Telephone Voting
Accessibility: Whether you are away on personal travel, suffering from illness, working days or nights, have a disability, or just have difficulty travelling, you can cast your ballot from anywhere with an internet connection or touchtone telephone.
Convenience: Remotely cast your vote from anywhere using a computer, smart phone, tablet device, or touchtone phone, 24 hours a day over an extended voting period.
Environmentally-Friendly: Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions as voters no longer need to travel to polling locations.

Nomination Period
Voting Day is Monday, October 24, 2022. Nomination for candidates for the 2022 Municipal Election opens on Monday, May 2, 2022. You can register in-person with the Clerk at the Township Office (9 James St, Parry Sound), by appointment only, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Nomination period closes Friday, August 19, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.
Due to COVID-19, nomination meetings may be held by phone, or virtually, with a follow-up appointment to submit all required documentation.

Candidate Information
Any individual looking to run for Municipal Office must be considered an eligible candidate and complete the prescribed nomination procedures outlined below. For more information please review the 2022 Candidates' Guide - Ontario Municipal Council and School Board Elections.

Candidate Qualifications
A person is qualified to be elected or hold office, who, as of the day he or she files his or her nomination is:
- a Canadian citizen;
- at least 18 years of age;
- a resident of the municipality, is the owner or tenant of land in the municipality, or the spouse of such a person;
- not legally prohibited from voting;
- not disqualified for violation of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information;
- not disqualified by legislation from holding municipal office
Nomination Process
- Candidates must supply proof of endorsement from 25 electors at the time of submitting their nominations to be a candidate in the election
- Endorsements of a nomination must be collected as original signatures. The individuals providing the signatures must sign a declaration stating they are eligible to vote in the municipality on the day they sign the endorsement. This endorsement becomes a public record.
3. All nomination papers must be filed in-person by appointment at the Municipal Office located at 9 James Street in Parry Sound.
4. Candidates will be required to pay the nomination fee, provide identification, and swear an oath at our office.
Filing Fees
- Filing fee for nomination to the position of Reeve is $200.00
- Filing fee for nominations of Ward Councillor is $100.00.
- Payment must be in cash, cheque or money order payable to the Township of The Archipelago.
Withdrawal of Nomination
If a candidate decides they no longer wish to run for Office, the following must occur:
- File a written Withdrawal of Nomination form, in-person, with the Clerk;
- Provide identification; and
- File a financial statement by the deadline date.
The last day to withdrawal is Friday, August 19, 2022 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Voter Information
Who Can Vote?
- a resident in the Township of The Archipelago, or are the owner or tenant of land in the Municipality, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
- a Canadian citizen;
- at least 18 years old or older; and
- Are not prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act or otherwise prohibited by law.
- As a resident elector if you live in the municipality. You may own, rent, live in shared accommodation where you do not pay rent or live in the municipality but do not have a fixed address. Being a resident elector is the most common type of eligibility.
- As a non-resident elector if you own or rent property in a municipality, but it's not the one where you live. You can only be a resident elector in one municipality. However, you can be a non-resident elector in any other municipality (or municipalities) where you own or rent property.
- As the spouse of a non-resident elector if your spouse owns or rents property in the municipality or municipalities other than the one where you live.
Eligible College and University Students
The place where a student’s family resides is also their residence unless they have moved with the intention of changing their permanent lodging. A student may vote in the municipality where he or she is temporarily residing while attending school as well as at this or her permanent home in a different municipality, provided that he or she has not abandoned the family home.
Persons Prohibited from Voting:
a) a person serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution (including a sentence served in the evenings or on weekends);
b) a corporation;
c) a person acting as executor or trustee or in any other representative capacity;
d) a person who has been convicted of corrupt practice described in s 90(3), if Voting Day in the current election is less than 5 years after Voting Day in the election in respect of which he or she was convicted.

Third Party Advertisers
Effective May 1, 2018, new rules have been placed on advertisements during municipal election periods. From May 1, 2022 to October 24, 2022, no paid advertisements can be made to support or oppose a candidate or a question on the ballot for the municipal election unless that person is a registered candidate or registered third party advertiser.
Who can register as a Third Party Advertiser?
A registered third party advertiser is an individual, corporation, trade union, or other body that advertises to support or oppose a candidate or a question on the ballot for the municipal election. A registered third party is subject to many of the same requirements as that of a candidate, including filing registration papers, expense limits and financial statements, and is subject to the Township's Election Sign By-law and other legislation and by-laws.
No election advertising outside of a candidate or registered third party is permitted.
A third party may register with the Clerk's Department from May 1, 2022 to October 21, 2022. Registered third party packages will be available in the spring of 2022, or sooner. There is no registration fee for third party advertisers, but the Clerk must examine the registration, and then certify the notice of registration if deemed compliant, or reject the registration.
The following are not permitted to register:
- Municipal election candidates.
- Federal and Provincial political parties, constituency associations, registered candidates and leadership contestants.
- A Federal and Provincial government, municipality or local board.
If third party advertisers want to advertise in more than one municipality, they will be required to register in each municipality. This includes newspaper publications that originate in one municipality but are delivered to multiple municipalities.

School Board Trustees
School Board Trustee elections are also held on October 24, 2022. Nominations for school board trustee are accepted by the Clerk of the municipality with the most electors representing the school board district.
For the 2022 Election, the municipalities responsible for each school board trustee elections are:
